Existing Primary Play Area
Greenfield's current primary play structure is over 20 years old. Due to its age and heavy use, many of its structural elements have failed. One of its two slides was damaged rendering it unsafe for play. To ensure our students' safety, the slide was recently removed. In addition, several of its structural clips have failed. Because of the age of the equipment, replacement parts are no longer manufactured.
The current playground was not designed to inspire imagination, creative play or challenge. Students today, more than ever, need play that stimulates creative thinking, presents challenges and inspires imagination. In addition, the existing structure does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (the “ADA”) making it unsafe for children with disabilities. New equipment will be designed to facilitate the play of children of all ages and all abilities. |
Existing Kindergarten Play Area
Greenfield maintains a separate playground for its kindergarten students. One of the two structures, the half dome, dates from at least the 1970s. Due to its all metal construction and the playground’s southern exposure, it frequently becomes so hot that our littlest students are prevented from using it during outdoor play. The second structure is the same age as the primary play structure and suffers from similar wear and tear.
The HSA also intends to resurface the entirety of the play areas. The surfacing presents an acute issue for the kindergarten play area. Aside from rudimentary rubber mats located beneath the play structures, the play surface remains mostly concrete. |
"The number of bandaids we go through daily is sad."
